Solo Exhibition June 16 - July 5 2025

Silks, Horses & Hounds

Nichola's passion for art, horses, dogs, and the sporting world began at an early age. From being born into a horse racing family dating back to three generations of notable jockeys and trainers on both sides and brought up on a stud, Nichola was sketching her four-legged friends or on the back of her pony.  Finishing school, she dedicated many years to traditional training in drawing and oil painting at renowned ateliers in Italy, France, and America, thus giving her the valuable and necessary skills to capture her chosen subjects. During her twenties, alongside her painting, she rode out racehorses every morning. She was also significantly involved in her father Pat Eddery's training establishment, strengthening her ability to portray the racehorse. Over the past two decades, Ms Eddery's primary focus has been sporting art and portraiture; she has exhibited in London and internationally, including four solo shows and many group exhibitions and producing bespoke work for clients worldwide, including the Saudi and Qatari Royal families and leading racehorse owners. She has also had the honour of being commissioned to paint notable racehorses such as Sadler’s Wells, Honor Code, Postponed, and Simple Verse, to name a few.

Nichola's fifth solo exhibition explores the sporting motif, primarily celebrating the jockey in iconic owners' silks and portraying the graceful racehorse and the elegant sighthound. Her inspiration for this body of work began with a series of museum visits from sketching Hellenistic sculpture in Athens to exhibitions in London showcasing Sir Edwin Landseer's dog portraits and John Singer Sargent's incredible fashion portraits in the Tate Britain, which have been significant in creating her jockey and sighthound creations. Subsequently, Nichola has been the artist in residence at the National Horse Racing Museum for the past year and a half and has had the great privilege of drawing inspiration from the museum's collection, teaching masterclasses, making transcriptions, and having the honour of observing leading jockeys pose in notable silks in the museum's grounds. On this creative journey, Nichola has created a variety of pieces, including the painting 'The Sport of Kings and Queens", a 3/4 life-size portrait of James Doyle on Tactical in the King's silks in front of a 19th Century painting by James Pollard of the Ascot Heath, a homage to Royal Ascot, and the painting ‘Noble Hunter' portraying a whippet in front of the famous 13th Century V&A’s Devonshire Hunting Tapestry. From Nichola's studio in the Rothchild's yard to The Osborne Studio Gallery, you will experience Nichola's love for capturing silks, horses, and hounds.

It is a real pleasure to introduce Nichola Eddery, whose work enriches the visitor experience at the National Horseracing Museum in Newmarket as our resident artist, and whose third solo exhibition at the Osborne Studio Gallery in London confirms her position as one of the most gifted equestrian artists working today.

Nichola brings to her practice a rare combination of classical training, technical mastery, and deep intuitive understanding of the horse. Her work is rooted in the traditions of the Old Masters, yet it is unmistakably contemporary in its precision and vitality. Whether working in oil, graphite, or charcoal, her portraits convey not just anatomical accuracy, but the character, spirit, and lives of her subjects.

Raised in a racing family, Nichola understands her subject from the inside out, and it shows. Her art captures not only the beauty and athleticism of the thoroughbred but also the nuance of the racing world — the silks, the stables, the fleeting moment before the off. It is this authenticity that has earned her admirers across the racing and sporting world, as well as collectors far beyond it.

We are proud to count Nichola as part of the NHRM’s creative community and are delighted to see her work receive the recognition it so richly deserves. This new exhibition promises to be another compelling chapter in a career of growing distinction.
