Nichola Eddery (1982)

I have been interested in drawing and painting from an early age, this interest developed into a passion during my A-levels at Stowe School. From that time onwards I have been dedicated to developing my painting skills. I am fortunate to do a job that I love.

After a gap year travelling through Africa I studied at Charles H. Cecil Studios, Florence, Italy. I spent two and a half years learning the classical techniques of drawing and painting and understanding the importance of working from life. I was taught the Atelier Method, which is a “sight size” approach, used in portraiture and life studies. This method can be traced back to the old masters, ultimately to the works of Leonardo da Vinci and this method is the basis of much of my work.

In December 2003 I left Florence and returned home eager to pursue a career in painting. The intensive training received in Florence and inspiration from the works of John Singer Sargent, John-William Waterhouse, George Stubbs and Alfred J Munnings contributed to my unique style. Since returning to England I have enjoyed producing a variety of work.

As time has passed I have become more grounded in painting people as well as horses. I have been very fortunate to be commissioned to paint well-known horses such as Sadler’s Wells for Mr and Mrs John Magnier, Lion Heart for Mr Derick Smith, and Motivator. I have also been commissioned to produce group and single portraits.

I am currently working on commissions and preparing for an exciting venture that will take me to the Middle East in November.
